Review:
Eiko Kijima Exploring the formal possibilities of the medium, Eiko Kijima transforms photographic images into abstract images that seemed to have been painted or drawn. Applying the technique of Polaroid Emulsion Transfer, she peels the photographic emulsion from their original supports, as if they were skins, and then transfers them to other supports, such as acetate, fabric, or wood. While the images dry on the various surfaces, the artist further alters each photograph by manipulating and distorting this "wet" layer of skin. The resulting images, usually organized into installations, evoke the fragile ephemerality of the physical world. (excerpted from CAA NEWS Vol. 23 and the artist's own writing) Available research materials of Eiko Kijima in the AAAC Archives are 46 slides, two catalogs of the group exhibitions where the artist's works were included, invitation cards, Xeroxed copies of her works and a CAA news letter.
